How to Replace a Floor Drain?
2021-11-24

Things you need to prepare

Screwdriver, small hammer, sealant, a new floor drain

  1. Buy a new floor drain according to the size

You can make an inspection of the floor drain before removal. Check the shape and size of the floor drain. The square floor drain with a side length of 10 cm and the circular floor drain with a diameter of 12 cm are commonly used in household toilets. The diameter of the sewer pipe is generally 5 cm. If the odor proof core of the floor drain is broken, you can only replace the odor proof core, which can save your money.

  1. Remove the old floor drain

First slowly pry up the old floor drain cover from the floor with a flat-head screwdriver, and then remove the cement around the floor drain with a screwdriver so as not to let the cement fall into the pipe and block the pipe. You need to be careful when removing and do not damage the waterproof layer. Besides, the floor drain can be gently knocked with a small hammer to separate it from the concrete and then you may easily take out the old floor drain. Or the floor drain is fixed by screws, you can unscrew the screws with a screwdriver. After removing it, you’d better clean the dirt and cement around it.

  1. Install the new one

After the dirt and cement are removed, you need to dry it (if it takes a long time, it can be dried with a hair drier) before installing the new one. Next you should apply some sealant around the new floor drain that needs to be installed, so as to ensure a more solid combination between the new floor drain and the ground. Then you can install the new floor drain into the concrete, compact it evenly and remove the excess sealant. The newly installed floor drain shall be aligned with the ceramic tile, and the height cannot surpass the ceramic tile. After natural drying for several hours, it can be used normally.

Note:

In daily use, it is best to take out the odor proof core and clean it every month, which can not only prolong the service life of the floor drain, but also make the drainage more smooth and prevent foul smell.

Four types of floor drain

  • Spring floor drain. When the water pressure exceeds the spring force, the water of the spring will press downward. At the time, the sealing gasket will open and the water can flow out
  • Magnet floor drain. If the water pressure is greater than the magnetic force, the sealing gasket of the floor drain will open downward for drainage. If the water pressure is less than the magnetic force, the magnet will pull in and the sealing gasket will go up to stop drainage.
  • Gravity floor drain.Gravity floor drain uses the gravity force of water flow. The floating ball in this type offloor drain will automatically open and close the floor drain cover.
  • Silicone floor drain. The drainage mechanism of this type of floor drain is that the bottom of the silica gel will be washed away by water for drainage, and when water flow stops, the bottom of the silica gel will automatically close due to elastic force to achieve odor proof.
